Australian Speaker and World Renown Didgeridoo Player Comes to Bay City Academy:
Peter Harper and Bobbi Llewellyn, Australian natives came to the Bay City Academy to talk our 2nd and 3rd grade students.  They taught the children interesting information about the country of Australia and taught them about a traditional aborigine music instrument, the didgeridoo.  Peter is a world renown didgeridoo player who travels with his band and performs at schools around the world.
Students watched as Peter played this difficult instrument which requires you to blow out and inhale at the same time in order to produce a continuous sound. Then he added to this sound the barking of a dingo. It was amazing.
Peter and Bobbi helped the 2nd and 3rd graders paint their own 3 foot long didgeridoos and taught them to play it.  The school was alive with the musical sound of the Australian Bush.  G'day

Bertapelle News for November 11

Written by Sheri Bertapelle

Pumpkins On Parade - On Thursday, October 31, the 2nd and 3rd grade classes went on a pumpkin parade between the four classrooms. Students had decorated pumpkins as super heroes and created paper mache pumpkin friends. They displayed their creations and the stories they had created about their super hero pumpkins with their classmates. I hope you were able to enjoy the stories they brought home.

The Field Trip to Mid MIchigan Children’s Museum on November 6 was a lot of fun.  Students enjoyed a variety of wonderful hands on activities like water exploration and balls that float above puffs of air. Your children displayed their BCA Lumberjack character which made me proud to take them on the trip.  Thank you to Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Sherman and Mrs. Martindale who volunteered as chaperones.

Grandfriend's Day is November 22 at 10:15.  Students have written invitation letters inviting their grandparents to this event.

Bertapelle's Classroom News for October 3 - BCA

Written by Sheri Bertapelle

Taste of Africa

Some of you know my oldest son has been in the Peace Corps in North West Africa for the past two years. He served as a math and physics teacher to Middle and High School students.  In August he returned home and has agreed to talk to our class about what he experienced while he was there.  He is planning to be in our classroom on Friday, October 11.  Students will get a small taste of what it is like to go to school in Africa.

Our Classroom motto:  Make good choices  Do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do.

Choice Theory: Students are completing a writing project connecting what we have learned about our behavior cars with making good choices.  These colorful cars will be displayed in our classroom.  I encourage you to ask your child about what they are working on or better yet come in and see the projects in our room.

Curriculum Corner:

Language Arts: Students have started reading and writing workshop.

Reading Workshop:  As students choose books that are at their level (just right books) they are reading independently to build stamina which means they are reading for an extended period of time concentrating on making sense of what they read.

Writing Workshop:  Students are learning to complete journal entries in response to their reading.  Please ask your child what they read about at school each day.

Reminder:  Reading Logs for home reading will be due October 25.  Please be sure to read with your child each evening.  It is a fantastic way to spend quality time together and builds strong readers.  Enjoy!

Math: Students are continuing to work on place value to 1,000 and 10,000.  Please look for daily math pages to come home in your child’s communicator.  These pages will help you to understand what we are covering in class and how well your child is doing.  Please spend time going over these pages with your child.  If you have any questions about the work or your child’s progress feel free to contact me.

Upcoming events:

The second and third grade classes are planning a trip to the Mid MIchigan Children’s Museum on November 6.  More information will follow.

Conferences are coming up very soon.  Please look for the conference request form in the communicator and return it to me by next Tuesday, October 8.  If you would

indicate your first,  second and third choice it will help me to schedule these conferences.

I will be sending new book order forms home as soon as our last order comes in.  This order will be coming in shortly.

In the future you will be able to order your child’s books on line using the following:    Activation Code for Scholastic:     LLC26

We had our first library field trip this week.  The librarian provided a brief talk about proper library manners, a tour of the library resources, and a wonderful story about Creepy Carrots.  Students who had library cards were able to pick out two books which we are planning to keep in the classroom to read during reading workshop. If you would like to chaperone one of our trips, please let me know when you are available.

BCA students represented themselves, their parents, and our school very well.

Library Dates:  All visits will leave at 2:15  and  arrive back at approximately 3:15
